BEAUMONT, Texas — The Beaumont community is mourning the loss of 38-year-old Justin Balka, who was identified as the victim of a deadly hit-and-run crash Friday night on Washington Boulevard.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. near the 2900 block of Washington Boulevard, between 4th and 5th Street, near Donohue Street. Beaumont Police officers responded after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found Justin unresponsive in the roadway. Beaumont EMS also responded, but sadly, there was nothing that could be done. Justin had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say the preliminary findings indicate that Justin was attempting to cross Washington Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle. Following the collision, the driver did not remain at the scene and instead fled, leaving Justin behind.
Police immediately secured the area as investigators began working to determine what happened. Portions of the roadway were blocked, and yellow crime-scene tape was placed around the area while evidence was collected and the scene was examined.
