  • IN LOVING MEMORY OF SHELDON LAQUAN ROBERTS, 28

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SHELDON LAQUAN ROBERTS, 28

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — In loving memory of 28-year-old Sheldon LaQuan Roberts, whose life was tragically cut short following a fatal shooting on the city’s east side. Sheldon’s passing has left family, friends, loved ones, and those who knew him facing the heartbreaking reality of losing someone far too soon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called shortly before 7:45 p.m. Monday to the Budget 8 Inn, located at 6850 E. 21st St., following a report involving an incomplete 911 call. When officers arrived at the motel, they discovered an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound.

That man was identified as Sheldon LaQuan Roberts, 28.

Despite the tragic circumstances, Sheldon could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene. A life that still had so many possibilities ahead was suddenly taken away, leaving behind grief that cannot easily be put into words.

According to investigators, an altercation involving two or more individuals occurred on a balcony at the rear of the motel before the shooting. Two people were detained by police as investigators worked to determine what happened. Authorities later said both individuals were released.

The investigation remains ongoing, and many questions surrounding the circumstances that led to Sheldon’s death remain unanswered.

For Sheldon’s loved ones, however, this is more than an investigation. It is the loss of a person they knew, cared for, laughed with, talked to, and shared memories with. Behind the name in a police report was a human being whose presence mattered to the people around him.

At just 28 years old, Sheldon’s life was filled with years that should have been ahead of him. There should have been more birthdays, more family moments, more conversations, more opportunities, and more memories still to be made. Instead, those who loved him are now left holding onto the memories they already have.

His death is also part of a troubling history surrounding the motel. Police said this was the second fatal shooting at the location since May.

On May 14, 30-year-old Joshua Thompson was critically injured in another shooting at the motel. Thompson was transported from the scene after police received a shooting report shortly before 6:30 p.m. He later died from his injuries.

Previous reports have also indicated that the motel, located southwest of the interchange of Interstate 70 and Shadeland Avenue, has been the scene of multiple shootings in recent years.

But today, the name being remembered is Sheldon LaQuan Roberts.

A family has lost someone they cannot replace. Friends have lost someone whose presence can never be duplicated. Those who knew Sheldon are left with memories of his life and the pain of knowing that he will not be there to create new ones.

In times of tragedy, words can feel inadequate. No statement can undo what happened, and no explanation can immediately take away the pain of losing someone unexpectedly. The hope is that, with time, the memories Sheldon left behind will bring some comfort to those who are mourning.

May his loved ones remember the moments that made them smile. May they hold close the conversations, laughter, experiences, and memories they shared with him. And may they continue to speak his name so that his life is remembered for more than the tragic circumstances of his death.

As the investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Matthew Melkey with the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Matthew.Melkey@indy.gov.

Every piece of information could help investigators understand what happened and provide answers to those grieving Sheldon’s loss.

    🕯️ A LIFE REMEMBERED

Sheldon LaQuan Roberts was only 28 years old.

    His story should have continued.

His future should have held more opportunities, more memories, and more moments with the people who mattered to him.

Instead, his loved ones must now learn how to move forward while carrying the weight of his absence.

May Sheldon’s memory remain a source of strength for everyone who knew and loved him.

May his family find comfort during this incredibly difficult time.

May his friends continue to remember the moments they shared with him.

And may the circumstances surrounding his death ultimately be fully understood.

Gone too soon, Sheldon LaQuan Roberts.

You may be gone from this world, but you will never be forgotten by those who carry your memory in their hearts.

    Rest peacefully, Sheldon.

Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.

May his memory forever live on.
