WALKER COUNTY, Ala. — Elaine S. Lindstrom, a 37-year-old Birmingham woman, lost her life Monday afternoon after the vehicle she was driving left Interstate 22, traveled through a ditch, became airborne, struck a riverbank and plunged into a river in Walker County.
According to Alabama State Troopers, the deadly crash occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Monday on Interstate 22, about three miles southeast of Cordova.
Senior Trooper Gregory Corble said Lindstrom was behind the wheel of a Nissan Sentra when the vehicle veered off the interstate. The car struck a ditch before becoming airborne and hitting the riverbank. It then entered the river, resulting in a devastating crash.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Lindstrom could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.
Troopers said Lindstrom was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident as they work to determine what caused the Nissan Sentra to leave the roadway.
The sudden death of Lindstrom has brought heartbreak to those who knew and loved her. At just 37 years old, her life came to a tragic end during what began as an ordinary afternoon drive.
