  • IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOMILTRON SENTELL FAIR JR.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOMILTRON SENTELL FAIR JR.

With profound sadness, we remember 17-year-old Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr., a Gaffney High School student whose life was tragically cut short Wednesday morning in a shooting near a school bus stop on West Rutledge Avenue in Gaffney, South Carolina.

According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office, Fair was preparing to board his school bus at approximately 6:49 a.m. when he was approached by a male suspect near the bus stop in the 500 block of West Rutledge Avenue. Authorities said a brief altercation occurred before Fair was shot. Despite the immediate presence of others, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fair had reportedly walked from his apartment across the street to catch the school bus, beginning what should have been an ordinary morning on his way to school. Instead, a devastating act of violence ended the life of a young student with so much of his future still ahead of him.

The tragedy unfolded in front of approximately 15 students who were aboard the school bus and reportedly witnessed the shooting. The incident has understandably sent shockwaves through the Gaffney community, particularly coming only days after Cherokee County students returned to school for the new academic year.

Investigators are working to determine exactly what led to the confrontation and identify everyone involved. Surveillance footage from the school bus reportedly captured the suspected shooter fleeing the area before getting into a nearby waiting vehicle driven by another person.

The Gaffney Police Department has launched an active investigation, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Special Victims Unit – Department of Child Fatalities. The specialized unit routinely assists with investigations involving unexpected, suspicious, unexplained, or violent deaths of children under the age of 18.

In response to the shooting, Gaffney Police Chief Gerald Knight said additional patrol officers would be stationed near the location where the shooting occurred, as well as at schools throughout the area for the remainder of the week. The increased police presence is intended to provide reassurance and additional security for students, families, school employees, and residents.

The Cherokee County School District and law enforcement officials are continuing to work together as investigators gather evidence and seek answers. Authorities have also asked members of the public to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation remains active.

For Fair’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone who knew him, the loss is immeasurable. A 17-year-old life filled with possibilities has been taken far too soon, leaving behind grief, unanswered questions, and a community struggling to understand such a heartbreaking loss.

A school bus stop should be a place where students gather safely before beginning their day. On this morning, it instead became the scene of a tragedy that will forever remain in the memories of those who witnessed it.

As investigators continue their work, the Gaffney community is left to mourn a young life that should have had many more chapters to come. Fair was only 17 years old, with dreams, hopes, friendships, and a future that had yet to unfold.

May Jomiltron Sentell Fair Jr. be remembered not only for the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, but for the young person he was and the lives he touched during his time here.

  • IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOSHUA THOMPSON, 40 — TRAGICALLY LOST IN TUSCUMBIA CRASH

IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOSHUA THOMPSON, 40 — TRAGICALLY LOST IN TUSCUMBIA CRASH

With profound sadness, we remember Joshua Thompson, 40, of Cherokee, whose life was tragically cut short Tuesday following a devastating vehicle crash in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

Joshua was the only occupant of his vehicle when it collided with the rear of a dump truck that was preparing to turn left from U.S. Highway 72 onto Vulcan Road. Despite the efforts of those who responded to the scene, Joshua was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

According to Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque, Joshua was 40 years old and lived in Cherokee. His sudden passing has left family, friends and those who knew him facing the heartbreaking reality of a life lost far too soon.

The crash was reported at approximately 11:54 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of U.S. Highway 72 and Vulcan Road. Authorities said the dump truck appeared to have been preparing to turn onto Vulcan Road and into Vulcan Materials when the collision occurred.

Witnesses reportedly told police that the dump truck had its turn signal activated as it prepared to make the turn. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to Joshua’s vehicle striking the back of the truck.

Tuscumbia City Public Safety Administrator Tony Logan emphasized the importance of remaining alert while driving, particularly when traveling around large commercial vehicles. Large trucks can require more time and distance to turn, stop or change direction, making awareness and caution especially important on busy highways.

The force of the crash left the front end of Joshua’s vehicle heavily damaged. His vehicle remained behind the dump truck in the left westbound lane of U.S. Highway 72 while authorities investigated the scene.

The crash also caused significant traffic disruption. Westbound traffic backed up toward the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, while eastbound traffic was detoured onto Old Lee Highway toward downtown Tuscumbia.

Because the incident involved a highway fatality, a certified traffic homicide investigator was required to assist with the investigation. Tuscumbia’s certified investigator was not working at the time, so Tuscumbia police contacted Muscle Shoals Police Chief Clint Reck, who quickly sent a certified investigator to the scene.

Authorities carefully documented the crash and worked to determine exactly what happened before the collision. The investigation remains important not only for understanding the circumstances surrounding Joshua’s death but also for providing answers to those who loved him.

The initial emergency call reportedly came in as a crash involving an ejection. When officers arrived, however, they found Joshua inside his vehicle.

One westbound lane was reopened at approximately 1:15 p.m., and Tuscumbia units cleared the scene around 1:55 p.m., after the investigation and necessary roadway work had been completed.

For Joshua’s family and friends, however, the passing of those hours marked the beginning of a much deeper and more painful journey — learning to live with the loss of someone whose life mattered deeply.

    🕊️ Remembering Joshua Thompson

Joshua Thompson, 40, of Cherokee, will be remembered as a life that ended far too soon.

A routine Tuesday became a heartbreaking day for those who knew and loved him. In an instant, a devastating crash changed the lives of Joshua’s family and friends forever.

There are no easy words to explain the pain that comes with losing someone unexpectedly. The shock of a sudden death can leave loved ones with countless questions, memories and moments they wish they could relive.

Joshua deserved many more years of life — more opportunities, more memories, more time with the people who cared about him and more chapters in the story of his life.

Instead, his loved ones are left to remember him through the memories he created and the impact he had during his 40 years.

As the investigation continues, our thoughts remain with Joshua’s family, friends and everyone mourning his passing.

May they find strength in one another during this difficult time. May the memories of Joshua bring comfort in the days ahead. And may his life always be remembered with dignity, compassion and love.

Gone far too soon, but never forgotten.

    May he rest in peace.
