With profound sadness, we remember Chloe Verni-Lau, 19, who tragically lost her life in a devastating head-on crash in Boone County, Illinois, late Friday night. Her sudden death has left her family, friends and loved ones facing an unimaginable loss, while three other people involved in the collision were hospitalized with serious injuries.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 10:54 p.m. Friday on Spring Creek Road.
Authorities said Shaquan Hayes, 28, was driving a Ford Taurus while intoxicated when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota.
Chloe was among the occupants of the Toyota. Three people in the vehicle were transported to hospitals with serious injuries following the crash. Despite medical efforts, Chloe was later pronounced dead at approximately 11:42 p.m.
An autopsy determined that Chloe’s cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma resulting from the crash.
For Chloe’s family and friends, the news of her death is an especially heartbreaking loss. At only 19 years old, she had so much life ahead of her, with dreams still to pursue, experiences still to enjoy and countless memories that should have been made.
Her death has left behind a painful emptiness for those who knew and loved her. The people closest to Chloe will now have to face the difficult reality of moving forward without her presence in their lives.
The crash also left three other people seriously injured, adding to the devastation surrounding the incident. Their recovery will be another important part of the aftermath as families and loved ones wait and hope for healing.
Hayes suffered minor injuries in the collision. He was later booked into the Boone County Jail on charges of DUI causing death and driving under the influence.
As authorities continue dealing with the aftermath, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from impaired driving. A decision to drive while intoxicated can affect multiple lives in an instant, leaving families to cope with consequences that can never be undone.
For Chloe’s loved ones, however, she will always be remembered for the person she was rather than simply as a victim of a fatal crash. Her life held meaning, and the memories she created with family and friends will remain with them.
There will be birthdays, holidays, gatherings and milestones when Chloe’s absence will be deeply felt. Yet those moments can also serve as reminders of the love and memories she left behind.
May her family find strength in one another and comfort in the memories they shared with Chloe. May those who loved her continue to speak her name and honor the life she lived.
May Chloe Verni-Lau rest in eternal peace. She was only 19, and her life was taken far too soon. May her memory forever remain in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
