WACO, Texas — The Waco community is mourning the tragic loss of 49-year-old Yotanca Calhoun, who was fatally shot Sunday night on Summer Avenue, while 43-year-old Michael Calhoun has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. Police said the two men knew each other.

Waco police officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of Summer Avenue around 9:47 p.m. Sunday following reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Yotanca Calhoun at the scene and immediately began providing medical assistance.

Despite the efforts of officers and first responders, Calhoun was pronounced dead at the scene. His sudden death has left family members, friends, and loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.

Police said Michael Calhoun was not at the Summer Avenue location when officers first arrived. Investigators quickly began searching for him and later located him in the 2600 block of Alexander Avenue. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Authorities confirmed that the victim and suspect knew each other, although investigators have not released additional details about their relationship or what may have led to the shooting. A possible motive has not been disclosed.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. Investigators are continuing to gather information and examine the events that happened before the shooting.

For Yotanca Calhoun’s loved ones, however, the investigation cannot take away the pain of losing someone close to them. His death represents a heartbreaking moment for a family now forced to say goodbye far sooner than expected.

Yotanca was more than the victim named in a police report. He was a loved one, a family member, and a friend whose life mattered to the people around him. Those who knew him will now hold onto the memories they shared and the moments that made him a part of their lives.

Police said next of kin were notified before Calhoun’s identity was publicly released.

The shooting is being investigated as the third homicide of the year in Waco, adding another painful chapter to the city’s ongoing struggle with violent crime.

As the investigation continues, Calhoun’s family and friends are left to grieve while remembering the life he lived. In the days ahead, they may find comfort in coming together, sharing memories, and supporting one another through the difficult journey of loss.

May Yotanca Calhoun, 49, be remembered with love, dignity, and respect. May his family, friends, and loved ones find strength and comfort during this heartbreaking time.

Rest in peace, Yotanca Calhoun.
