LUBBOCK, Texas — The Lubbock community is mourning the loss of 40-year-old Crystal Vela, who tragically died after being struck in a late-night crash on University Avenue.
Crystal’s life was taken following a collision in the 6500 block of University Avenue late Sunday night, leaving family, friends, and those who knew her facing the heartbreaking reality of her passing.
According to the Lubbock Police Department, officers were called to the area at approximately 11:59 p.m. after receiving a report of a crash involving injuries and a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found Crystal Vela suffering from serious injuries.
Emergency medical personnel quickly responded and transported Crystal to University Medical Center (UMC) for treatment. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, her injuries were ultimately too severe. Crystal was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Her passing marks a heartbreaking loss for everyone who knew and loved her. A life that continued to hold memories, hopes, dreams, relationships, and moments shared with others was suddenly brought to an end.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit, as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Police identified the driver of the involved vehicle as Brian Rodriguez, who was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in connection with the incident.
Authorities have stated that, based on the information currently available to investigators, the evidence does not support any additional or enhanced charges related to Crystal’s death at this time. Officials also noted that charges could potentially be amended or additional charges could be filed if new information emerges during the investigation.
While the investigation continues, Crystal’s family and loved ones are left to grieve a loss that no family should have to endure.
