BOONE COUNTY, Ill. — Chloe Verni-Lau, 19, tragically lost her life in a head-on collision late Friday night, while Shaquan Hayes, 28, was identified as the driver authorities said was intoxicated when the crash occurred on Spring Creek Road.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened at approximately 10:54 p.m. Friday. Investigators said Hayes was traveling along Spring Creek Road in a Ford Taurus when he crossed the center line and struck an approaching Toyota head-on.

The violent impact left several people injured. Three passengers in the Toyota were taken to hospitals for treatment of serious injuries. Chloe was also seriously injured and later succumbed to her injuries, being pronounced dead at approximately 11:42 p.m.

An autopsy was performed following the crash. The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office determined that Chloe died from multiple blunt-force trauma caused by the collision.

For Chloe’s family and friends, her death represents a devastating loss. At only 19, she was still at the beginning of her adult life, with countless opportunities, plans and dreams ahead of her. Her sudden passing has created a void that will be deeply felt by everyone who knew her.

The circumstances of the crash have also left three other people dealing with serious injuries. Their hospitalization adds another painful layer to a collision that has affected multiple lives.

Hayes reportedly suffered minor injuries in the crash. Following his treatment, he was booked into the Boone County Jail and faces charges of DUI causing death and driving under the influence.

The tragedy highlights the potentially devastating consequences of impaired driving. A single decision made behind the wheel can change the lives of innocent people and their families in an instant.

As Chloe’s loved ones mourn, they are left to remember her for the life she lived rather than the circumstances of her final moments. The people closest to her will carry memories of her personality, laughter, conversations and the experiences they shared together.

Although Chloe’s life ended far too soon, the memories she created will remain with her family and friends. Her absence will be felt during future birthdays, holidays, celebrations and other milestones she should have been there to experience.

As the healing process begins, those who loved Chloe will hopefully find comfort in one another and in the memories that keep her close.

May Chloe Verni-Lau rest peacefully. May her family and friends find strength, comfort and healing as they mourn her tragic loss, and may her memory continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
