With profound sadness, we remember Abraham Canela Vasquez, 17, of Anderson, South Carolina, whose life was tragically cut short following a drowning incident at Lake Hartwell. Abraham was a senior at Westside High School, with so much of his young life still ahead of him. His unexpected passing has left his family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire community grieving a heartbreaking loss.
According to the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Abraham was swimming with a friend from one shoreline to another when he apparently became exhausted and went underwater. He did not resurface, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation.
Emergency crews were dispatched to 850 River Forks Road in Townville after receiving reports that a person had gone underwater and never resurfaced. Multiple agencies immediately responded to the scene and began searching the area.
Two marine boats and multiple divers searched for more than an hour as rescuers worked tirelessly to locate Abraham. The search eventually expanded to include aerial assistance from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Drone Unit, which located him from the air.
The recovery marked a devastating end to the search. The Anderson County Office of the Coroner identified the victim as Abraham Canela Vasquez, 17, of Anderson.
Following the preliminary investigation, the Coroner’s Office determined that Abraham’s cause of death was freshwater drowning, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.
Abraham’s passing is especially heartbreaking because he was only 17 years old and was a senior at Westside High School. He was at an age when many young people are preparing to graduate, pursue their dreams, and begin the next chapter of their lives. Instead, his family and loved ones are now faced with the unimaginable pain of saying goodbye.
To his family, Abraham was more than a name in a report. He was a beloved son, family member, friend, and a young man whose presence brought meaning to the lives of those around him. His classmates and teachers at Westside High School are also left to cope with the loss of someone who was part of their school community.
The response to the tragedy involved numerous emergency agencies, including the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson County Fire Department, City of Anderson Fire Department, Anderson County Technical Rescue Team, Anderson County EMS, MedShore EMS, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office assisted through several specialized units, including its Patrol Division, Dive Team, Drone Unit, and Forensics Unit. The Anderson Technical Rescue Team and other emergency personnel also contributed to the search and recovery effort.
The incident remains under investigation by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Although the manner of death has been determined to be accidental, authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
For Abraham’s loved ones, the days ahead will undoubtedly be filled with sorrow, memories, and questions. Losing someone so young and unexpectedly can leave an emptiness that words cannot fully describe. Yet the memories Abraham created during his 17 years of life will remain with those who knew and loved him.
