WHARTON COUNTY, TEXAS — With profound sadness, family, friends, and the community are mourning the tragic loss of John Muniz, 61, who died Thursday evening following a train-versus-pedestrian incident near Business 59 and County Road 222.

According to the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area at approximately 8:18 p.m. on August 6 after receiving reports of a train-versus-pedestrian accident. Fire and EMS personnel also responded to the scene.

When deputies arrived, they found a deceased man who was later identified as John Muniz, 61.

Justice of the Peace T. Drapela responded to the scene and conducted the inquest, a standard procedure following an unattended death to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have not released additional information about what happened before the incident, including how John came to be on or near the railroad tracks or which railroad company was involved. The Wharton County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation remains active.
