With heavy hearts, we remember Toni Elena-Ann Salazar of Stuart, Iowa, whose life was tragically taken in a shooting that has left her loved ones and the community grieving. The incident also resulted in Iowa State Patrol Trooper Chase Carruthers being wounded, while 46-year-old Austin Nichols Reed of Stuart was arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
Authorities said the incident occurred in the 200 block of SW 6th Street in Stuart. According to a criminal complaint obtained by KCCI, the shooting happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Investigators allege that Reed approached two people who were standing near a gazebo. He reportedly walked up behind them and fired a shotgun, striking Toni. She suffered critical injuries and ultimately died as a result of the gunfire.
Court documents further allege that Reed pointed the shotgun at the second individual and pulled the trigger. The weapon reportedly malfunctioned, allowing that person to get away without suffering physical injuries.
For Toni’s family and friends, the news of her death has brought unimaginable heartbreak. Her life was ended suddenly, leaving behind memories that those who loved her will now carry with them.
Toni’s passing is a devastating loss, not only because of the circumstances surrounding her death, but because of the person she was to the people in her life. Every individual leaves behind a story made up of relationships, memories and moments, and Toni’s memory will continue through those who knew her.
The incident also placed law enforcement officers in danger. Trooper Chase Carruthers was shot while responding to the situation and was transported by ambulance to a Des Moines hospital.
The Iowa State Patrol reported that Carruthers was in stable condition. He has served with the Iowa Department of Public Safety since 2025.
Authorities arrested Austin Nichols Reed, 46, of Stuart, following the incident. He has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder of a police officer. The allegations against Reed remain accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
As investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting, Toni’s family is left to cope with an absence that cannot be filled. The days ahead may be difficult, but the memories she shared with those closest to her can remain a source of comfort.
