JEFFERSON COUNTY, OHIO — A devastating vehicle collision in Smithfield Township claimed the life of 29-year-old Corey Shetler of Dillonvale, leaving family, friends, and loved ones grieving while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 8:22 p.m. Sunday on County Road 10, approximately 0.2 miles west of State Route 152 in Jefferson County, according to the Steubenville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Corey Shetler was traveling as a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Authorities said he sustained serious injuries in the collision and was later confirmed deceased at approximately 9:38 p.m.
According to investigators, the crash involved a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Chevrolet Silverado. The Cavalier was traveling westbound on County Road 10 and was approaching a right-hand curve in the roadway.
At the same time, the Silverado was traveling eastbound. Troopers said the pickup truck failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway.
The Silverado then reportedly overcorrected, causing the vehicle to cross the centerline and enter the lane occupied by the westbound Cavalier.
The two vehicles collided, with the right side of the Silverado striking the right-front portion of the Cavalier. The force of the crash resulted in serious injuries and prompted a significant emergency response from multiple agencies in the area.
Following the collision, investigators said the Silverado traveled off the left side of the roadway and entered a ditch. The pickup eventually came to rest facing west.
The Cavalier remained in the westbound lane but came to rest partially off the right edge of the roadway.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene to assist those involved and secure the area. Despite the efforts made following the collision, Corey Shetler succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that evening.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said alcohol was identified as a contributing factor in the crash. Authorities have not indicated that the investigation is complete, and troopers continue to work to determine the full sequence of events that led to the deadly collision.
A large number of emergency personnel and law enforcement officers responded to the scene. Agencies assisting included the Smithfield Township Fire/EMS/Police Department, Wells Township Police Department, Brilliant Fire/EMS, Dillonvale Fire/EMS, Mt. Pleasant Fire/EMS, Short Creek Fire/EMS, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Investigative Unit.
Their response reflected the seriousness of the incident and the coordinated effort required after a major crash involving multiple vehicles.
