ST. ALBANS, WV — Cecil Pomeroy Jr. has died following an alleged assault at the EZ Street Bar in St. Albans early Saturday morning, August 15. Authorities identified Tyrone DeShawn Washington of Culloden, West Virginia, as the accused in the case. Washington has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and malicious assault in connection with Pomeroy’s death.
Road deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to the EZ Street Bar at approximately 12:46 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a fight at the business. When deputies arrived, they found Pomeroy lying unconscious in the parking lot.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, an intensive investigation followed, with investigators relying on eyewitness accounts and video surveillance to piece together what happened before deputies arrived.
Investigators determined that Pomeroy had entered into a verbal argument with Washington. Authorities said the confrontation escalated, and Washington allegedly struck Pomeroy several times, causing life-threatening injuries.
Pomeroy was transported to Thomas Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
His death has left family, friends and others who knew him facing the devastating reality of a life lost following a confrontation that began with a verbal dispute. The sudden nature of the tragedy has undoubtedly made the loss even more difficult for those closest to Pomeroy.
For his loved ones, Cecil Pomeroy Jr. was more than the victim identified in an official investigation. He was a person with a life, memories, relationships and people who cared about him. His passing has created an absence that cannot easily be filled, leaving those who knew him to remember the moments they shared and the impact he had on their lives.
Washington has been taken into custody and formally charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree and Malicious Assault. The charges represent allegations, and the case will proceed through the criminal justice system.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Investigators are working to establish the complete sequence of events and gather all available evidence connected to the fatal assault.
As the investigation continues, Pomeroy’s family and loved ones are left to grieve his passing and begin the difficult process of moving forward without him.
