ST. ALBANS, WEST VIRGINIA — A community is mourning the loss of Cecil Pomeroy, Jr., who died after an altercation at the EZ Street Bar in St. Albans during the early morning hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, road deputies were dispatched to the business at approximately 12:46 a.m. following a report of a fight. When deputies arrived, they found Cecil unconscious in the parking lot.

What began as a verbal disagreement reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation. Investigators determined through eyewitness accounts and video surveillance that Cecil had become involved in a verbal argument with Tyrone DeShawn Washington of Culloden, West Virginia. Authorities allege that the argument escalated and Washington struck Cecil several times, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Cecil was transported to Thomas Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Tragically, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

His death has left family, friends, and those who knew him facing the devastating reality of a life lost far too soon. A night that began like any other ended in tragedy, and Cecil’s loved ones are now left with memories of the man they knew and cherished.

There are moments when words cannot adequately express the pain caused by a sudden loss. For Cecil’s family and friends, the coming days may be filled with grief, disbelief, and countless questions. The absence of someone who was once a familiar and meaningful part of everyday life can be difficult to comprehend.

Cecil’s life should be remembered for more than the circumstances surrounding his death. Behind the investigation and the heartbreaking details of the incident was a person who had family, friends, memories, and a place in the lives of others. Those who cared about him will continue to hold onto the moments they shared with him and the memories that cannot be taken away.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Cecil’s death. Tyrone DeShawn Washington has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and malicious assault in connection with the incident.

As the investigation continues, authorities have emphasized that all parties are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

For Cecil’s loved ones, however, the legal process cannot change the deepest part of their loss. They are now preparing to say goodbye to someone whose life ended under tragic circumstances and far earlier than anyone expected.

In times of grief, memories often become the most precious things left behind. The sound of a loved one’s voice, the stories shared, the laughter, the ordinary moments, and the memories created over the years can remain long after someone is gone. Those memories can provide comfort when the pain feels overwhelming.

Cecil Pomeroy, Jr. will be remembered by those who knew him, and his passing serves as another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a disagreement can turn into irreversible tragedy.

May his family find strength in one another during this painful time. May his friends find comfort in the memories they shared with him. And may everyone who loved Cecil find peace as they navigate the difficult days ahead.

Rest in peace, Cecil Pomeroy, Jr.

Your time on this earth ended far too soon, but the memories you left behind will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.

Gone too soon. Never forgotten. Always remembered.
