WINFIELD, Kan. — A devastating tragedy unfolded in Winfield on Tuesday morning after five people, including four children, were found dead inside a home in west Winfield in what authorities are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Winfield Police Department are leading the investigation following a shooting at a residence in the 400 block of West 9th Street. Authorities identified the suspected shooter as 53-year-old Ronald Williams Sr., who was also found deceased.
The other victims were identified as 44-year-old Kelly George, a female resident of the home, along with four children: 9-year-old Carol A. Williams, 7-year-old Ronald H. Williams Jr., 5-year-old Sarah K. Williams, and 3-year-old Kelly M. Magee-Williams.
According to the KBI, the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide after a man reportedly threatened to harm his family. The shocking discovery prompted a significant law enforcement response in the neighborhood as officers and investigators worked to secure the residence and determine exactly what had happened.
Winfield police officers were dispatched at approximately 8:50 a.m. Tuesday to the home in the 400 block of West 9th Street following a report of a serious incident. Emergency responders and law enforcement personnel quickly converged on the area, resulting in a large police presence near the residence.
Earlier reports indicated that a man had contacted 911 and reportedly said that he was going to harm himself and his family and that everyone inside the home was deceased. The information immediately raised concerns for the safety of those inside the residence and prompted officers to respond.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., KBI spokesperson Melissa Underwood confirmed that the Winfield Police Department had requested assistance from the state agency in the homicide investigation.
Police later confirmed the identities of the victims and the suspected shooter, revealing the heartbreaking scale of the tragedy.
Among those killed were four young children — Carol A. Williams, Ronald H. Williams Jr., Sarah K. Williams and Kelly M. Magee-Williams — whose deaths have added an especially painful dimension to an already devastating incident.
The loss of the children has left the Winfield community mourning as investigators continue working to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting. Authorities have not indicated a motive beyond the preliminary information that the suspect had reportedly threatened to harm his family.
