BUFFALO, NEW YORK — With profound sadness, family, friends, and loved ones are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Kenyan S. Potter, 21, of West Seneca, New York, whose life was tragically cut short after he went missing while swimming in the outer harbor at Buffalo Harbor State Park.

Kenyan’s death has left behind a deep sense of grief for those who knew and loved him. At just 21 years old, he had so much life ahead of him, and his passing is a painful reminder of how quickly a peaceful moment can turn into an unimaginable tragedy.

According to the New York State Police, shortly after midnight on August 8, 2026, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted the New York State Park Police and the Buffalo Police Department following a report of a missing swimmer at Buffalo Harbor State Park in the city of Buffalo.

Investigators determined that Kenyan had been swimming in the outer harbor of the state park when he was reported missing. What began as a desperate search for a young man who had disappeared in the water quickly became a heartbreaking recovery effort.

Multiple agencies responded and worked together in an effort to locate Kenyan. The search involved members of the New York State Park Police, Buffalo Police Department, Buffalo Fire Department, Erie County Sheriff’s Office, and other responding agencies.

After an extensive search, Kenyan was located deceased by the Buffalo Police Department Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Team.

For his family and friends, the moment his body was recovered marked the devastating end of a search that everyone had hoped would have a different outcome. Instead of the relief of bringing Kenyan home safely, loved ones were left to face the unimaginable reality of his passing.

The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene, and an autopsy has been scheduled as authorities continue working to establish additional details surrounding the tragedy.

The investigation and recovery effort brought together numerous agencies and specialized teams. The New York State Police Unmanned Aircraft System, New York State Park Police, Erie County Sheriff’s Office Air 1, Buffalo Police Department, Buffalo Fire Department, and U.S. Coast Guard Buffalo all assisted during the response.

Behind every search-and-rescue operation is a family waiting, hoping, and praying for the safe return of someone they love. For Kenyan’s loved ones, those hopes were tragically replaced by grief.

Kenyan was only 21 years old. His life was still unfolding, his future was still ahead of him, and there were undoubtedly countless memories yet to be made. His passing leaves behind moments that loved ones will now hold onto forever — memories of his smile, his presence, his personality, and the impact he had on the people fortunate enough to know him.

While the circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated, the focus now turns toward remembering the young life that was lost.

A life should never be measured only by the number of years someone lived, but by the memories they created and the people they touched along the way. Kenyan’s life, though tragically short, will continue through the memories shared by those who loved him.

For his family, the days ahead will undoubtedly be difficult. Grief does not disappear overnight, and the pain of losing someone so young can be overwhelming. In the days and weeks ahead, family and friends will be left to navigate a new reality without Kenyan — carrying his memory with them while trying to find strength through an incredibly painful loss.

May they find comfort in one another, in the memories they shared, and in the love that surrounds them during this difficult time.

As the community mourns, thoughts and prayers go out to Kenyan S. Potter’s family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved him.

May they be surrounded by compassion and support as they grieve the loss of a beloved 21-year-old whose life ended far too soon.

Rest peacefully, Kenyan S. Potter.

Your time on this earth was far too short, but the memories you leave behind will remain in the hearts of those who knew you. May your loved ones find strength in the days ahead, and may your memory forever be a source of love rather than only sorrow.

Gone too soon. Never forgotten. Forever remembered.
