JEFFERSON COUNTY, OHIO — A tragic crash in Smithfield Township has claimed the life of 29-year-old Corey Shetler of Dillonvale, leaving loved ones mourning his sudden passing as the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the collision.
The crash happened at approximately 8:22 p.m. Sunday on County Road 10, about 0.2 miles west of State Route 152 in Jefferson County, according to the Steubenville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Shetler was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. He suffered injuries in the collision and was later pronounced dead at approximately 9:38 p.m.
Investigators said the crash involved a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Chevrolet Silverado. The Cavalier was traveling west on County Road 10 and approaching a right-hand curve when the collision occurred.
Meanwhile, the Silverado was traveling eastbound and approaching a left-hand curve. According to troopers, the pickup failed to negotiate the curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and then overcorrected.
The Silverado subsequently crossed the centerline and entered the westbound lane, where it collided with the Cavalier. Troopers said the right side of the Silverado struck the right-front portion of the Cavalier.
After the impact, the Silverado left the roadway on the opposite side and entered a ditch before coming to rest facing west. The Cavalier remained in the westbound lane and came to rest partially off the right side of the road.
Emergency responders from several surrounding departments were called to the scene to assist following the crash. Responding agencies included the Smithfield Township Fire/EMS/Police Department, Wells Township Police Department, Brilliant Fire/EMS, Dillonvale Fire/EMS, Mt. Pleasant Fire/EMS, Short Creek Fire/EMS, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Investigative Unit.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
