Crystal Vela, 40, Dies After Pedestrian Crash in Lubbock; Driver Arrested

LUBBOCK, Texas — Crystal Vela, 40, was killed after being struck in a late-night crash on University Avenue, while Brian Rodriguez, the driver involved in the incident, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, according to the Lubbock Police Department.

The fatal incident occurred late Sunday night in the 6500 block of University Avenue, where officers were called to investigate a reported crash involving a pedestrian.

LPD said the initial emergency call came in at approximately 11:59 p.m. Responding officers arrived at the scene and found Vela suffering from serious injuries.

Emergency medical crews provided assistance before transporting Vela to University Medical Center (UMC) for further treatment. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she later died as a result of her injuries.

The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit has taken over the investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances that led to the collision.

Investigators identified the driver as Brian Rodriguez, who was arrested following the crash and charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).

According to LPD, investigators have not found sufficient evidence at this stage to support any additional or enhanced charges connected to Vela’s death. However, police noted that the charges could be modified or additional charges could be filed if new evidence or information becomes available.

Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what occurred immediately before the collision and any other factors that may help establish how the incident happened.

The crash prompted a response from police officers and emergency medical personnel, who worked at the scene and provided aid to the injured pedestrian.

Vela was transported to UMC with serious injuries but ultimately succumbed to those injuries.

Her death adds to the tragic consequences of a pedestrian crash and has left her family and loved ones grieving an unexpected loss.
