NORTH WILKESBORO, North Carolina — A family and community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 35-year-old Lucas Seth Anderson, who died following a drowning incident at Twisting Falls.
Lucas, a North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, man, was visiting the popular local waterfall when tragedy struck Saturday afternoon. What was meant to be a day spent enjoying the outdoors with a group of people ended in an unimaginable loss.
According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Twisting Falls Saturday afternoon following reports of a possible drowning. Witnesses told authorities that a man had jumped from the falls and subsequently became caught in the undertow.
The powerful movement of the water pulled Lucas beneath the falls, creating a desperate situation for those who were with him.
A member of Lucas’ group was able to reach him and retrieve him from the water. CPR was immediately initiated as those at the scene desperately tried to save his life while emergency responders made their way to the location.
Emergency personnel with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and the Carter County Rescue Squad responded to the scene, along with assistance from other local agencies.
Despite the efforts of those at the scene and emergency responders, Lucas could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death has left family members, friends and others who knew him grieving the sudden loss of a 35-year-old man whose life ended far too soon.
Lucas’ passing serves as a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can turn into tragedy. Waterfalls and natural swimming areas can appear peaceful and inviting, but powerful currents and undertows can create extremely dangerous conditions in moments.
