With profound sadness, we remember Melody K. Wilburn, 49, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, whose life was tragically cut short in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County early Wednesday morning.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened at approximately 3:55 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 near milepost 75 in Woodville Township. Wilburn was traveling eastbound in a 2014 GMC Terrain when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle left the right side of the roadway and entered a ditch.
Despite the efforts of those who responded to the scene, Wilburn was pronounced dead at the crash site. Her passing leaves behind a profound sense of loss for the people who knew and loved her, as a life that held countless memories, relationships, hopes and moments was suddenly taken away.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Wilburn was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Authorities also said that impairment is not suspected to have been a factor. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as they work to determine exactly what led to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
Several agencies responded to the scene and assisted with the investigation and emergency response, including Lake Township Fire and EMS, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, the Sandusky County Coroner’s Office and Madison Motor Service Towing.
For those who knew Melody, the circumstances surrounding her passing cannot diminish the memories she leaves behind. Her life was more than the circumstances of her final moments. She was a daughter, family member, friend and a cherished part of the Oak Harbor community. Every person who crossed paths with her may carry a different memory, but together those memories become part of the legacy she leaves behind.
A sudden loss such as this can be especially difficult because there is often no opportunity to say goodbye. The shock of losing someone unexpectedly can leave families and friends searching for answers while trying to come to terms with an absence that can never truly be replaced.
